October 9th - Zephyr and calf cruising together in the Strait

What a beautiful fall day! It’s been a bit chilly around Nanaimo lately, but there has been lots of sunshine and little wind, making perfect conditions for whale watchers!

Cascadia set out on October 9th at 12pm and found two humpback whales, a mother and a calf, traveling in the Strait of Georgia. The whales were spending lots of time at the surface, giving us many opportunities to view their unique dorsal fins. From a partial fluke shot and the dorsal fins we were able to identify these whales as Zephyr and her 2019 calf. We have only seen these two once before, on August 24th!

We also saw a beautiful bald eagle take off from high up in the trees, and a large haul out of harbour seals.

Here are some of the best photographs taken by marine naturalist Rebeka Pirker.
