September 15th - Humpback whales near Valdes Island

On September 15th Cascadia set off the dock to search for fins and blows. A humpback whale had been found nearby, just east of Porlier Pass! Our vessel spent an hour watching humpback whale “Fader” (BCY0195) doing deep dives and were even treated to a cartwheel!

In the afternoon Cascadia headed out again to the same general area, but this time there were 3 whales found a little further north. Humpback whale “Corona” (KEX0022) was traveling with a mother and calf pair. They were doing some shallow dives while traveling, and we got to see some pec slaps and a tail slap! The pectoral fin of a humpback whale can get up to 15ft long!

Here are some of the best photos taken during the tours by marine naturalist Cheyenne Brewster.
